| Any reports on the Trinity near Douglas City? Spring (summer) salmon?
Bob Simms mentioned that a 36 inch??? Brown trout was caught. It must have been huge. Last year (November) I caught an 8 pound Brown downstream from Douglas City.
Is there a link to find reports on the Trinity?
Different subject: Late this year, and the first of next year will be a banner year for Steelhead. They will be the first returning fish after the Hatchery was opened. |

| Drifted upper middle. water was a little high, but color was near perfect. No big takers. My buddy and I caught about 1/2 a dozen trout(pretty fish, but not the biggens!) and we were getting nailed by them all day. we weren't the only ones. There where about 10+ boats on that stretch and I herd of only one hooked and another landed(spent wild hen). I am gonna go out on a limb and say it is done. The returns have been really bad on the whole west coast...But hey, if you have fished anywhere else, I'd like to hear about it. CHEERS! |

You're a moron for fishing without knowing the regs! Don't go blaming anyone but yourself. Everyone knows you need a steelhead card on every river in CA with runs of steelhead! Smith and Cetco are fishing 2-5 fish per boat with a mix of fresh run and downers. |

| I have fished the Mad river for many years and still do. I always used bait with a 24" leader. Never caught anything except a few small trout. I learned a few years ago that the bulk of the Steelhead...most are Hatchery fish...are caught via long leaders. In Sacramento they call it Flagging. It is snagging. If long leaders were not used very few fish would be caught.
I pass no judgement on anyone and I now use a leader about 4 foot long. Anything longer for me is too cumbersome. Unfortunately, I have only caught (hooked) two in 3 years.
Hatchery fish are meant to be caught...that is the whole purpose for inland fishing.
It is interesting to note that Fly fishermen think that they are catching Steelhead voluntarily...wrong...they are snagging...their leaders are as long as all the line on their reel.
Long leaders are legal...if you want to be skunked....use a short leader with bait!

| Just a tip for Ocean Perch. Once while fishing for perch at the mouth of the Klamath, my partner and I ran out of sand crabs. We had caught one or two in an hour while standing near a group of veteran perch fishermen who were bragging about being close to limits. We began chunking up some anchovies we had with us. Soon we had bagged right past the veterans and were headed toward the truck with our limits. Kinda made those other guys mad. Try it some time. It has been working for us for years now. |

| The lagoon has broken out and we hit 5 beautiful mint fish in 4 hours of angling. Threw black leech (dubbed) with sink tip (depth charge). Took pram just past first bend above the causeway 101 bridge. Fish ranged from 4 pounds to just over 8.....All released, but as I was leaving, near dark, wakes began moving up......slough/creek very shallow, just above knees, with the north bank slightly trenched. Extremely cold (30 degrees at (9:30 a.m.).

| Of course the Mad River is closed right now except for the small stretch from the Hammond Trail Bridge to the mouth, due to low flow closures. But... Ruth is really low and the bass are biting, so are the Kokanee and trout. Everyone is trolling with small spoons and triple teasers at about 30 feet. The bass are from the bank using small divers and spinners (Buds #4). Has the moderator/enforcer ever considered including Ruth Lake??? |

| My father-in-law and I just experienced a get fishing adventure at the mouth of Redwood cr. We used an A-Frame net and loaded up on Day fish. These Day fish were delicious butterflyed and breaded. The key is to watch for birds and when the seagulls start lining the beach you know they are in the surf. Be careful not to take too many because cleaning them is a real pain. Unless you eat them whole. Some folks were using throw nets and that looked to be just as productive. Don't forget to bring the surf rods for perch while youre waiting for the run to begin. We caught a few of those too. |

The Vermeere family had quite a day on the Reservoir. When it was all said and done the group landed 25 of 35 Trout. Most of the Trout were of the Rainbow variety. They did land two other species of Trout, one Brookie and one Brown. Trolling, jigging and plugs were all successful methods with the hotshot/worm combo landing most of the Trout on the day. We trolled a Sep's kick-dodger and a worm in the morning out near the dam and picked up a few fish, then we jigged a buzzbomb in the same area for a few more( The Brookie and Brown both were caught while jigging). Then we headed up the McCloud River and finished off the day hooking over 20 nice Trout. Back-trolling a size 50 hotshot/worm combo was the hot method of the day. I'd like to thank Arnim, Bill, John, Robyn and William for a great day you all kicked some serious Trout butt!!!!!!
********The Klamath River is finally under 2000cfs (1970), the section below the Irongate hatchery should now be fishable. The water has been on a steady drop for the last few days so now is the time, before it drops below 1000cfs.

| McCloud Reservoir - June 11th, 2006

The conditions at McCloud Reservoir are the best they have been so far this season. The water is up and the fish are hungry. Sunday, I landed 20 Trout up near the castle, and all were caught after 1 in the afternoon. Almost any method of fishing will work right now. The Trout are also taking dry flies, as numerous hatches are occuring throughout the day. A lot of the fish are heading up the river to spawn, they are looking fat and healthy. Some of the Trout that I caught and released were easily 20-inches and 2-pounds. The Klamath is still flowing rather high (2990cfs), but it is not muddy coming out of Irongate Dam. One could probably fish it right now but it would be a little fast and high, 2500cfs or less would be better. The river has not been fishable since early December, so the Steelhead and Trout should be hungry and ready to take your offerings.

McCloud Reservoir - June 7th, 2006

Last Saturday, Guy Ives and I fished McCloud Reservoir and caught fish on just about everything we used. We ended up catching and releasing 25 Trout some close to 20 inches and 2 pounds. We mainly fished the river near Hearst Castle. Bouncing bait, flies (Woolley "Booger" Bugger), and trolling a Sep's dodger with a worm trailer were the most effective methods. The reservoir is in great shape as are the Trout. The water level is near perfect so if you looking for a good time this would be it.

McCloud Reservoir - June 1st, 2006

McCloud Reservoir has been fishing well this spring. Last Monday, I took my son and wife out for some fun on the water and we caught a dozen Trout and one nice 22 inch German Brown Trout. We mainly fished up the river arm of the lake catching quite a few Rainbow Trout. Trolling a Seps dodger and a worm worked best. We landed the Brown Trout just around the corner from the boat launch, trolling a F-7 flatfish near the shore at 25 feet. The lake is full of water and fish so come on out a give it try.

| south fork of the trinity is awsome!!!! yesterday I caught 5 cutthroat believe it or not , also I caught two steelies weighing about 4pounds a piece. they both looked beautiful on camera.. don't worry I released all of them because I myself would like to see a comeback in population. anyway, that evening I fished the VanDuzen at dinsmore and it too, was crystal clear... fished for two hours and landed two half-pounders. So if you are looking for fish there all up river in the middle of nowhere... good luck and have fun. |

| One week now since the big rains, and the rivers are dropping and clearing. From the guages I see the VD and Mad look to be close to green fishable.
I'm wondering if this is typical that these specific drainages tend to clear faster? Would someone be willing to comment on which rivers tend to clear faster and slower after a big blowout?
Also what would you say is the ideal level to start fishing when the flows are dropping?
please give me some intelligent feedback... the board is boring when everyone is whining about or defending snagging. There is a rant section! | I think that as 48" leader law is a great idea!!! I have fished for salmon and steelies for about 15 years, and I thought that I knew alot of techniques, but when I started fishing at the Madd, I watched the snaggers over by the culvert in disgust, those guys(and you know who you are)aren't fishing they are snagging, and most of the time not in the fishes mouth. I consider myself a sportfisherman and it sickens me to watch these people foul hook fish after fish. So all you snaggers LOOK OUT BECAUSE THE REST OF US ARE WATCHING AND WILL REPORT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Brookies, browns, and rainbow are all biting at Lake Siskiyou. My client Rhonda Lauritson of Napa had quite a day, landing all three species of trout while trolling a Seps kick dodger (dark rainbow trout pattern, and all silver pattern) and a small piece of worm. The biggest trout of the day was a 19-inch 2-pound rainbow, that put on quite a show, jumping twice and making some nice drag burning runs when ity got near the boat. In the end, Rhonda won the battle and got herself a nice dinner fish. These fish are a great fun on 66 ultra light Rogue Rods (SP662) and Okuma Inspira 15 ultra light reels spooled with 4-pound Yo-Zuri hybrid clear line. We landed 30 total trout for the day (2 brookies, 5 browns, and 23 rainbows). The landing ratio did not start out good as we only boated two out of the first 10 but we got on a role after the slow start and landed 28 out of the next 32. The fish seemed a bit sluggish in the morning, which was probably the reason for the 2-for10 start. They were just not biting the bait very hard. The weather could not have been much better Sunny with just a slight breeze, although warmer air temperatures would have been nice. It did not get over 36 degrees and was as low as 20 in the morning. Rhonda and I pretty much had the lake to ourselves, we were 1 of 3 boats on the water. I have some days open this year if you like to get some fishing in before the New Year starts. | Guy Ives (The TackleShop in Yreka) and I fished Eagle Lake Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and despite every type of weather Mother Nature could throw at us we kicked butt! Wind, rain, snow, and ice, you name we fished in it and landed 33 of 45 Eagle Lake Trout. These fish were awesome. Every Trout was at least 2 pounds and 19-inches. The biggest was in the 5 to 6 pound range. Guy almost landed the hog of the trip, we estimated that fish be in the 8-pound class, and it was just ten feet from being landed, before it spit the hook. The majority of the Trout were landed by trolling the Seps kick dodger with a worm trailer. We trolled crawdad plug, and flies and caught fish as well but the good old worm and dodger worked best. Eagle Lake closes at the end of the month, so there is some time left to get up there and fish.

If you choose to take your boat up there make sure it is in top shape, the weather will test your gear and you. I recommend the following:
1. Four wheel drive- we used it everyday to get the boat in and out of the water
2. Chains- would have been handy to have, the ramp gets icy
3. Propane heaters- we had them going the whole time on the water it made the boat enclosure nice and toasty
4. Safety equipment- Life vests, GPS, cell phones, fire extinguishers, medical kit, spare motor parts and tools
5. Warm clothes- plenty of layers, fleece and raingear is a must as well as good gloves
6. Food and water- it is important to eat and drink in cold weather your body uses up a lot of energy trying to stay warm
*You can never stress enough how important it is to be prepared when heading out on the water, now matter what the weather is like. Let me just say that Guy and I had a great time, but you have to stay on your toes out there. Here is a sample of what we had to deal with over three days.
Fog- we needed GPS to find our way around the lake
High winds- I have a 21ft boat Willie Raptor Jet Boat with a 200hp jet, 9.9 kicker motor and a full enclosure, the wind came up fast on Tuesday, creating 3 to 6 foot swells, it got dangerous out there in less than 20 minutes, that was not much fun, we found a bay to fish in where the wind was not as bad.
Cold rain snow and Ice- We broke thru ice right at the dock just to get out on the water, if it was much thicker we would have not been able to fish. The ramp got so icy that pulling the boat out was difficult. We spun all four tires all the way up the ramp. |

Twenty-four turkey day trout makes a nice warm up for a hot turkey dinner. Conner, Marie and I spent time before dinner landing one trout after another at Lake Siskiyou. The first 18 we landed while trolling the last half dozen I fly-fished a woolley booger bugger while Marie helped Conner drown a few night crawlers. The trout are in the shallows and at the mouths of all the feeder streams. We only saw one other boat on the lake today. It is nice to have a lake full of trout all to yourself. The trout fishing at Lake Siskiyou is easy pickings. I trolled a Seps kick dodger with a worm trailer and landed 18 trout yesterday. The trout were all over the lake and could be seen surfacing for flies until dark. Many of the trout were in the 1 to 1.5 pound range. I also landed a few trout on the fly rod up near the creek on a woolly booger bugger. Monday, I drifted the Klamath River just above the mouth of the Scott River with Doug Blaney. We landed two adult Steelhead and some small trout. The river looks good but the fishing was pretty slow.

| I fished the Feather down at the outlet hole or "hell hole" as I like to call it. I fished on 8-28-05 in the afternoon from the Vance ave. side I hooked 11 fish and landed 2 bucks in the 18-22lb class. One of the fish was pretty spent so he is headed into the smoker the other was bright with no sores and really clean meat. The older fish was probaly from the spring run given his condition, but the other was a fresh fall run fish that had alot of fight, fight, in him. Tight lines to all!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Fished three rivers in one day. SKUNKED!!!
Started on the Feather in the wildlife area 500 yds upstream from the afterbay outflow. No strikes saw three fish break the surface. I moved to the outflow where I found thirty anglers - no fish. No one had caught fish at this spot, it was now 6:45-7:00 AM. Move 200 yds upstream to find a private riffel. Hooked one fish - nothing in the net.
Moved to the Yuba below the Hwy 70 bridge and downstream. Very hot. Very slow moving. Warm water. Quite clear but no fish. The one local I talked to said it has been a week since fishing was consistent.
Moved to the Sacramento were the Yuba enters. The conditions looked great. The water from the Yuba was much clearer than the Sac and it made that great transition zone color change. I tossed spinners, spoons, roe, dynamite.... NO FISH!!!
I guess all the other reports are on target. The fall run has begun. The fish are moving but theyre just not on a hot bite yet.
Thanks to all the people that I pestered on the stream on Sunday. I'll see you again next Sunday.

| Fishin Fool why couldn't you be the person to post a report if you are able to do so? I won't have anything to report like yours until the middle of the month. Whats to tell? Your fishing one of the rivers that is seeing kings on the tide and catching them with one of many techniques that are working with a rod and reel or a mono gill net! So whats your story? Bentrod |
