	Klamath River Fishing - "Klamath In-River Salmon Fishing is"OPEN"for 2008" Phone: (707)-391-7144 - Book Now for Best Dates !! News Flash: The 2008 "Pacific Fish Management Counsel "(PFMC) has selected its new management plan. (direct link to the plan http://www.pcouncil.org/salmon/salpreIII08/salpreIII08.html) Within the report, specifically regarding the 2008 Klamath In-River salmon allocation, on page 16 "South of Cape Falcon" item 1, you will see that Klamath River recreational fishery allocation is 22,500 fish for sport fishing, & Item 2, Klamath Tribal allocation is 27,000. This means that the 22,500 fish will be split between the upper and lower rivers and the native Americans will receive 27,000 fish for commercial fishing. Presently there is a two adult salmon limit per person and when Fish & Game make their final ruling in June, it will probably remain the same. This sport fishing quota is the second largest we have seen in many many years. This will truly be the year of Klamath in-river salmon fishing. Also we are just beginning to start picking up spring run salmon which will only get better as the day progress. 	Even once the Mad reopens all there are is a bunch of baby fish. I was actually fishing a stream that is a tributary to the Mad, it probably isn't legal to fish I have no idea, my friend just took me, and we both caught little browns. It blew my mind. Toss a little gold spinner in may through summer, whenever the river is actually open, on ultra-light tackle (I personally like ugly stiks) and you can catch 10+ little 6 inch trout. Also near sundown the bigger 10-12 incher start feeding, but you seem to have to match the hatch a little to hook into them. Be safe and tight lines.

	Chris, As I read my regulations book I see that the fishing on the Mad River ends on March 31, that's today. It doesn't start up again until the fourth Saturday in May, and then there are various stipulations. My regulations book was good only through February 28, 2008, even though we had 29 days in February. You might check the Eureka Fly Shop, 707-444-2000 for information. I believe the Trinity and Klamath are still open for Steelhead.

	I was at the Mad Sat. and Sun., I won't say I was fishing because I will not consider what everyone was doing fishing. I have not fished steelhead a whole lot, mainly w/ guides up north. I wanted to see what this Mad river long lining, flossing, fly fishing or what it really is, "SNAGGING" was all about. After a day and a half I had enough. The older guys try to act like they are fishing, with short, small jerks of the pole, but the younger generation w/ no license, no report card, have taken this to a new level of small numerous casts w/ monster hook sets w/ any twitch in the line, every time, right in front of God and everybody. I saw fish snagged with eyeballs gone, huge gashes in there bodies from previous snaggers. Come on, is this the way it is going to be? It is no womder that our fishing industry is such a mess. What ever happened to the Dept. of Fish and Game? Does anybody care? What ever happened to the rule of releasing foul hooked fish? Help us all.

	I could see about 3 feet deep in the water. Easy to hike across below hatchery. Used a spin and glow, pink with about three feet of leader to the weight. Caught only one small one. Didn't see any being caught. Saw several along the bank by the second path below hatchery. Good luck

	I fished the 29th to the 2nd The river is not bait water yet.I hooked 14 fish landed 9 running a 7ft leader 1 pink corkie and 1 pink bead.I was tucked up in the trees below 2nd road down to the cross walk casting 50ft out or less good luck

	when the Mad is flowing >2000 csf(4000 plus now) fishing is tough.I usually reccomend fishing <2000 if your looking for productivity.At this level visibility is decent for those who are looking to angle for fish rather than take fish. Coho Malone

	It looks to me like it'll be fishable with bait by early next week, should be perfect by that weekend. I'm hoping to hit it then. Of course this is all assuming we get like <1/16" of rain in the next week or two because for the next few days it'll be fairly suseptable to some rapid rises from rain, especially if the snow from this weekend starts to melt and drain into the river. You just gotta pray for cold and no precip. Be safe and tight lines.

	Good morning. I enjoyed my visit last week on the Mad River. I tried a bit of bright colored flies to no avail. After watching a guy catch 3 steelhead in about a half hour at a spot I had just fished I decided to come back the next day and use his method. Two corkies, red hook and a fairly small sinker about 6 feet up the line. Didn't do me any good. But I do feel more comfortable fishing that part of the river and met some nice folks. It looks like the rain probably mucked the river up a bit but the weather is looking pretty good for the extended forecast. My question is, how long does it take for the Mad to clear, assuming no rain after Wednesday? I'd like to take another shot at it before the season ends.

	I lived in Humboldt County and learned to stealhead fish on the Mad River. At times when the water was high and muddy, we used to fly fish with weighted lines and catch fish. There is no doubt this is just like the long lining technique used today. Swinging flies is similar to long lining as you use a sinking line and it swings across the bottom. Indicator fly fishing is a little different as the line is not swinging across the bottom at least most of the time. A few weeks ago when I hooked seven fish in water that was not ideal as there was only a few feet of visibility. I was indicator fly fishing and I did get a couple of true takes during my drift. I also had a couple of hookups at the end when the line was swinging. I do mostly agree with Doc but feel indicator fly fishing is not exactly long lining. Let's have fun and keep catching those beautiful steelies.

	I used to fly fish on the Mad in the high water and catch alot of fish. Fly fishing and long leaders is the same type of fishing believe it or not. because I know they cant see that fly in muddy water but you still catch fish on that fly because all your doing is long lineing them the same way your catching them on your baitcaster.Fisherman back in the mid 80's got the hang of the long leaders on the Mad because there use to be alot of fish caught in the muddy water by the fly fisherman so everybody startred useing the long leaders and haveing as much luck as the fly fisherman so if they ever outlaw long leaders get a flyrod and you can do the same thing

	I fished the Mad a few weeks ago for the first time in years. Did pretty well fly fishing for the first time on the river going two for seven. Both landed were fresh chromies. I don't have any problem with any legal method used to catch steelies. My main objective is to catch fish any way legal, I hate to get skunked. After many years of not fishing the Mad, I was still amazed that things have not changed on the river. The willow long liners are still shoulder to shoulder. What a great fun day snagging others lines most of the day. The shoulder to shoulder fishing method is great as it keeps all the other holes open to catch steelies as I would much perfer. I ask only one thing, could the long liners please move aside once in a while as we fly guys sometimes have to move down river to land a nice fish? Is that too much to ask? My friend almost lost a 16 pound chromer due to long liners casting on his line!

	The Mad will not change much due to rain as long as the river stays close to the same level.The best way to find out is to go to USGS Real time water data for California.I personally find that the fishing is better when the river is dropping or stable instead of on the rise Good luck.

	Went 1 for 6, primarily 10 ft. leader with 2 beads. Felt many drive bys put missed the hook set. Tomorrow brings a new day...gotta love the long line. Why get skunked when you can long line and its now snagging its an art.

	As a primarily lure and bait fisherman I can honestly say that I do not snag my fish (I mean of course on a few occasions a dumb fish will run into a hook, but that happens to anyone) so damn straight I'm a purist, I'm the one on the riverbar who gets skunked 9 out of 10 times, but I am damn proud of that because I know that that one time means I did everything right, I defied all odds and got a fish that didn't want anything but one certain source of food to bite. I am very, very proud of the fact that I work and toil for hours to find out what to use, I am proud of the books, aritcles and reports I read to find the correct combinations of lure, size, color and so on. If you can feel that same feeling while puttiing your hook mnually into the zide of a fish's mouth than sweet, I'll just head down to the hatchery, go up to a holding area and manually stick a hook in the fish, because, after all, that's all you are doing.

	Yeah Long Liner... I do catch fish drifting beads actually. Also you people that say fish dont eat plastic. Have you actually looked how close a bead of the right color imitates a fish egg? It looks way better than any glow bug I have ever seen. It all depends on how you are fishing them which will determine if you are lining or ligitamatly catching them. Right now with the mad a 3000 cfs and completely off color you need a stinky bait (roe or tuna balls) to ethically catch a fish, yet you go down to the river and find all these guys long lining who say the fish are eating the bead that they cant even see. Thats incorrect, for the beads to work there must be some clarity (3 feet or better in my opinion). I have not yet fished beads on the mad, but on the trinity in clear water they have been deadly at the right time. I have fished an orange bead, with a glo bug dropper and the fish grabbed the bead 9 times out of 10. You cant tell me that fish dont eat beads! Theres my rant for the day.

	Steelhead will bite beads, but it often depends on the color of the bead and the water. The thing that REALLY pisses me off is people beading in water a fish will only bite stinky stuff. In that case it is an obvious snag. I still think that y'all should spend the extra couple bucks on gittin' a bag of scented pink worms, that way it will be more likely the fish bite, and probably more of an attractant anyways. Or during bait season, if a bead is a roe imatation, why not get a bag of roe? Be safe and tight lines

	Cmon, the plastic Im talkin about is a a plain bead that is only needed to straighten out the ten foot leader. Not worms or glow bugs, or dipsy doozies. Those fish do bite, but are yarn or more like rubber. nobody I now fishes beads unless they are lining. If you think they are biting it you are dilusional. It doesn't suprise me a guy who defends lining also fishes on spawning redds.

	Legal Beagle, If the scope of your fishing experience is so limited that you think that all beading is snagging then I抦 sorry. Trout and steelhead love beads they are the most accurate representation of an egg you can get. If you抳e ever fished behind spawning salmon for trout/steelhead with a glo bug, reeds reaper, unreal egg, and a bead the bead will out fish the rest of um 75% of the time on a dead drift under a float. Yes there are people that abuse all fishing methods. Some people need to learn respect. Also don抰 steelhead eat plastic worms?

	the mad only offers a small window of oppurtunity to catch amixed bag of hatchery and wild steelhead.i think this has led to some alternative ways to be consistantly productive when you get the oppurtunity to fish.and because of this it has led to more and more long lining of fish.personally i do not find this challenging and results in taking a fish that is probably not interested in what is being offered.and lets face it most are probably not interested in any of it once hooked.i fished for years drifting corkies but evolved to fly fishing to increase the challange.the bottom line is be respetful to the fish and other fisherman and have fun. coho malone

	Long lining is wrong don抰 do it out of respect for the fish. If you say that all the fish you抮e catching on beads are hooked in the mouth you are slow on the hook set I fish beads all the time pegged 1� from the hook with 10� leader and will still hook a few on the out side of the mouth. Why do so many people think it is ok to snag fish using a long line? Might as well get out your pitchfork!

	On the bead fishing subject, I was on the Mad in January. Fishing a bead with long leader. ALL the fish I landed were hooked from the inside of the mouth. Many other fish I saw landed were from inside out as well. I know that often the fish are hooked from the outside in, or in the fin or somewhere other than the mouth, but sometimes, even often times, they bite it, and bead fishing can be just as legitemate as any other style of fishing. A legal caught fish is a legal caught fish. Fish whatever works if it's legal, and don't be so judgemental. Enough said.

	Pissed that you outfish us 10:1?? BS, I could care less if you caught more fish snagging than I did floating my flies down the river. When I snag a fish I get absolutely no satisfaction from catching that fish, infact I snagged two fish on the upper trinity yesterday and left to go back down river where there was less fish so I wouldnt have to deal with snagging them. Your numbers are meaningless ling liner, and your method is cheating, face the fact.

	I fish the Mad and have never long lined! I think its bullshit no matter how legal it is. It isn't fair to the fish or the fisherman who are fishing bait or lures and such. I have hooked plenty of fish on the Mad using lures, bait and floating flies, fo rthose who say it is the only way to catch a Mad fish.

	It depends how you are bead fishing. If your bead fishing with a honkin weight and an 8-12 foot leader with a bead on the end, yeah your going to be snagging the fish since only the line is going to be going through the fishes mouth and the bead is still high in the water column due to its light weight, and the current pushing your line downstream will eventually hook you into a fish on the OUTSIDE of the fishes mouth. I have found the other sort of bead fishing to be effective which is fly fishing with 8 foot leaders and putting one small split shot about 14 inches above the bead not a honking 1 oz. weight. You will find that the fish voluntarily take the bead and they are hooked on the inside of the mouth which is not snagging rather than the outside which would be snagging. 90% of people on the mad are snaggin slimebags.

	Check the regs. It maybe closed. Bead fishing, long lining , flossing, etc. Your basically snagging the fish. I don't do it myself because I don't fish the Mad. But it is legal, everybody on the Mad does it ( very few will admit to it) and were talking Hatchery fish. So if you want a Hatchery Meat fish and with the river conditions it's probably your best bet.

	I had never heard of 'bead' fishing. Googled it. Apparently it is rather controversial. I hope to come up and be on the river by the 15th. I would assume that the farther up river one were to fish the clearer it would be? Is the Maple Creek area on the Mad, over Kneeland, a good place to fish?

	Glad you two brought this up. So when I'm reading the regulations book and it says "Only barbless hooks may be used from Nov 1 through March 31." that is the only restriction for that time period meaning bait is OK. Prior to that, from Fourth Saturday in May through Oct. 31 the restriction is artificial lures with barbless hooks. Then that Section 8.00 is the low-flow restriction, which isn't of a big concern right now.

	The Madd is a baitless river that means "no bait". So if you are using roe you better be looking over your shoulder for the F&G warden. I hope you get caught, or maybe you just need an education???

	Had a chance to go out on the Mad today. Was there for a few hours in the early afternoon and hooked one nice bright chrome fish. It jumped a couple of times before coming off the hook while drifting roe. After that I landed a spent hatchery hen that had another hook and line in her mouth. She was a bit beat up, must have been caught up on a log or rock for a bit. Landed her on a #5 spinner - Chartreuse and silver.

	The Mad is producing some fish under the Blue Lake bridge. I have been there two days in the past week and have seen about four fish landed, and that's out of a good 50 fisherman, so it isn't exactly hot and heavy. The fish I got a good look at was about 3-6 pounds and hatchery. There are many fish in there, adn they seem to ge most active at around noon or early evening. It is all a matter of how aggressive the fish are at that time and what bait you are using. So far, from what I have heard the hottest bait is roe. I haven't been to the Smith but have heard it is fairly slow. Be safe and tight lines.

	I'm in the same boat with Tom Davis, not literally, but would like to come up this week through Sunday. Weather report looks "iffy" but would not mind fishing in a little rain. I would be, for the most part, fly fishing with waders. Any advice would be appreciated.

	What are the chances of C.D.of F&G. putting a hit on those Harbor seals and Sealions that like to crawl right up the fish ladder and get the fish in the holding tank? I know its a $10,000 fine for one of us to take matters into our own hands.

Just go to the site and click on the Mad river button, and you can check out other rivers in the area too. 	I currently live in Modesto and was raised in Eureka. I'd like to come up to Humboldt County for a week or so and fish the Mad River and the Mattole River. It looks like the weather is clearing and I need to know , or at least have an idea when these rivers might clear for steelhead and salmon. I was up in early December and enjoyed watching salmon and catching a steelhead on the Mad River and would enjoy trying it again. I fly fish, wade and hike streams. I've used a kayak and float tube on lakes.

	Still a little early for a strong run of hatchery fish. It shouldn't be long though. River has been very fishable with fish scattered through out. Getting 2 hatchery fish a day is no problem when the water is not to muddy. River has been on the rise and currently very muddy with more rain on the way.

	In the last several weeks including 12/11/07, there is more than an abundant of steelhead. Practically all are wild fish. Flys are deadly. Bait does not work well. Hooking, but not landing, with a black nymph seems to be the best. Usually, the Trinity is best in November. Steelhead are late this year. I believe that the Mad will come alive in the middle of January. Most will be wild. Hatchery steelhead will not be abundant until 2009!

	been fishing the Mad on and off for a month. All the spots where the fish should be are virtually empty. Only caught two three pounders and seen only three fish in the water. Last year by this time I had caught over twenty fish. The fish were all taking worms and cut anchovies. Lures, plugs, salmon eggs all would not work, even with scents and dyes. There arent any fish under the Blue Lake bridge either, where there were many salmon and steelhead at this time last year. Either the fish are late or this year will suck. Too bad with all the effort people put in to save the hatchery. Go to the Trinity if you want to catch fish. The Mad is a waste of time, money, and effort.
